engaging the community: fq’s first workshop

The crowdsourced-based project Forced to Quit had its first public activity engagement on January 10th, 2025, at the Counting What Should Count: A Data Feminism Workshop. The event occured at the House of Connections, in Groningen, and was organized by Marília Gehrke, Assistant Professor in Media and Journalism Studies at the University of Groningen. The workshop was supported by Jantina Tammes School of Digital Technology, Society, and AI via the Early Career Research Prize awarded in 2024.

The afternoon of activities started at 14:00 with the keynote talk by scholar and author Catherine D’Ignazio (Data+Feminism Lab/MIT), followed by the panel composed of Aranka Ballering (University of Groningen), Lisa Gaufman (University of Groningen) and Loes Aaldering (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). A total of 40 people coming from several cities in the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden joined the workshop.

Subsequently, Forced to Quit‘s leader, Marília Gehrke, invited the participants to add new entries to the collaborative map. In total, 20 new female politicians, journalists, and activists who left their public-facing jobs due to violence were mapped.

The afternoon ended with a networking session among participants (see below).

The photos of the event were taken by Marília Gehrke & Eedan Amit-Danhi.
